aging mindfully

Old age challenges the human mettle.

The degree of human culture and evolution is best revealed during the helplessness of aging, especially when the aging party are your parents, and you the caretakers. The reversal of roles is more painful than it appears from a distance. The strong, passionate and wholesome humans who got you into this world, who helped you stand and thrive in it, are now at the mercy of your selflessness. Whereas caring for a cute vulnerable baby can seem like a warm soak in an oasis of emotions, caring for aging adults with an unyielding demeanor can sometimes feel like tending to a cactus in the scorching desert. This is where one’s mettle as a human is truly tested and revealed. Elderly parental care can be a thankless, relentless job, with unexpected and mostly unpleasant surprises health-wise. Unless expressions of gratitude and appreciation are delivered in exchange on a regular basis, the job can soon seem exploitative and frustrating. We see a different side of life, one that is sombre, unglamorous and quite uncool. At the same time, if done with Awareness, it prepares us for the inevitable road ahead. The do’s and don’ts, the dialogues and attitudes which can bring forth the best in human service around us as we helplessly age. We can prepare ourselves earlier for the process of aging mindfully and gracefully, especially emotionally with the right attitude.

The Vedic culture imparts a lot of importance to caring for your parents/ the elderly in a society during old age. It is the basis of a compassionate and wholesome society. Your children have access to the wisdom of the elderly grandparent, while the elderly find respite in their playfulness. Such a selfless expression of service translates into a positive energy field at home which attracts the Grace. What exactly is this Grace, also called Barkat or Mehr in Urdu, or Guru Krupa in Sanskrit? Is it something tangible which can be measured, or just a philosophy? To be continued.

Each of us is aging. Each of us is taking care of someone at some point in time. It’s up to us how we process the factors which can potentially deplete our energy. It all depends on our level of awareness. Wholesome choices can be made when we have access to the complete truth regarding our human body-mind- energy system.
